Even the most breathable sneakers can feel hot and sweaty this time of year, but unfortunately most sandals aren’t designed to support high step counts. So, what’s a walking enthusiast to do?

After a few rough heat waves in New York City, I set out to find a pair of sandals that were breathable, supportive, and cute enough for everyday wear. And while it may sound like a tall order, I finally found a pair that fits the bill.

Vivaia's AdaptAll™ Sport Sandals are light and airy, with a contoured construction to help evenly distribute pressure and reduce fatigue as you walk or stand. Plus, they have the added bonus of being sustainable and stylish.

Wait, do my sandals need arch support?

According to podiatrists Janine Ferrigno-Taddeo, DPM, and Anne Sharkey, DPM, arch support is one of the most important factors in finding the right footwear. Arch support improves shock absorptionposture, and stability—and both those with flat feet and high arches need proper support.

Studies show that good arch support keeps your feet and body aligned1 and can help prevent injury. When shopping for sandals specifically, experts recommend looking for a sturdy structuremolded footbedwide heel, and durable sole

Of course, many experts and well-being enthusiasts are turning toward barefoot designs instead of thick cushioning—and there's research to back these styles as well. But even foot and gait specialist and chiropractor Courtney Conley, D.C. (who loves barefoot shoes!) told mindbodygreen she opts for a higher-cushioned option to ease the impact when walking on concrete for extended periods (i.e. me all day in New York City).

Still, Conley recommended that those shoes have a wide toe box, which helps your foot remain in its most natural position and prevents your toes from cramping up.

Why I love these sandals

They're so comfortable

Disclaimer: I've walked a lot of miles in uncomfortable sandals over the years—and I have sore feet and bunions to show for it.

But as soon as I slipped my foot into the Vivaia Sport Sandals, I breathed a sigh of relief. The contoured footbed felt so comfy beneath my feet, and the shoes have a lush 30 millimeters of EVA cushioning to soften your landing.

I love that the AdaptAll Strap™ helps me find the perfect fit for my foot shape, and the sandal has a fairly wide design that really does allow my toes to splay out. I never realized how crunched in they had been in other pairs!

The mesh upper material feels soft and breathable against my feet, an there's no uncomfortable rubbing or chafing (even on my +12,000 step days).

They're great for walking

You're not going to be running marathons in these sandals, but they've become my go-to for high-mileage walking days in hot weather.

An anti-slip outsole makes this a great shoe for all surfaces and the uniquely cushioned insole helps reduce the impact on your joints as you walk.

I can actually feel the difference on the days when I wear the Vivaia sandals compared to less optimal footwear. My stride feels more stable, and my feet and body are less fatigued at the end of the day (a huge plus for an active person like myself).

Bonus: The insole is moisture-wicking (perfect for hot days), and the entire shoe weighs just 6.9 ounces (which makes them great for travel).

They're chic & versatile

I invested in these sandals for better foot health and support, but it certainly doesn't hurt that they're so cute. I get compliments almost every time I wear the Vivaia sandals, and I love that they're versatile enough to wear with dresses, shorts, pants, workwear, or activewear.

They're available in 23 neutral and bright colorways and sizes 5 to 11 (with half sizes, too).

They're sustainable

When shopping for shoes, I often have to sacrifice sustainability—but Vivaia wins eco-friendly points for using recycled plastic water bottles and responsibly sourced materials in its designs. Plus the packaging is recyclable!

They're durable & easy to care for

Ill-fitting footwear is associated with higher instances of foot pain and disorders, which is reason enough to invest in a high-quality pair. Not only are the Vivaia sandals stylish, supportive, and functional, but they're so durable I can tell they'll be with me for many years and walks to come.

To keep these sandals looking fresh and clean, I simply wipe them down with a damp cloth as needed.

The takeaway

Your eyes may already be wandering toward fall styles, but your feet will thank you for investing in a pair of supportive sandals. The Vivaia AdaptAll Sport has become my go-to summer shoe. These sandals help me hit my step goal with ease, and I'm fielding compliments with every wear. I've already added a few other colorways to my cart.

Psst: The brand's plush loafers are an MVP in my cooler weather wardrobe.
