Do you feel like you need to be “on top” all the time? Upbeat and together, morning, noon and night. Well, you don't.
As great as it is to be this kind of person generally - someone who chooses to have a positive attitude on life and the world, who works hard to find lasting happiness - the truth is, nobody feels good all the time.
Every now and again many of us just fall into the proverbial pit. And when it happens, feelings of frustration and weakness come to the surface.
So, how should you handle yourself on down days? Here are five tips to help you out:
1. Choose the right people to be around.
It's best to be with people you trust and feel safe with when you're in this state, so you know they will fully understand, care for you and have your best interests at heart.
2. Explain how you feel.
Rather than flip out and cancel arrangements, explain to your loved ones how you're feeling: “I don't feel great at the moment. I'm a mess, and not very fun to be with.” You'll be surprised by their reaction – appreciating your honesty and wanting to spend time with you, as you are, however crappy you feel.
3. Do something low-key, yet lovely.
If you're not feeling up for much, you don't need to push yourself. Choose something simple and peaceful to do, such as watching an uplifting film, baking, swapping stories, reading together or going for a nice walk in nature.
4. Allow your friends to nurture you.
It's a fact that people like to help others, especially those close to them. Allow yourself to be held and supported in these times. After all, you'd do the same for them, wouldn't you?
5. Just be, as you are.
It's OK to just be. Whatever it is that you “are” right now – allow it, and breathe into it. Know that it's not good or bad. It's just your reality, and it'll pass. So, just be.
There will be down days, and there will be brighter ones. As hard as it can be, try not to cancel plans the minute you sink under. It'd be a shame for you and your loved ones to miss out on opportunities together. After all, they're what life is all about, right?
