Before this website launched, phrases like mind-body spirit, mind-body soul, and mind-body connection were all pretty common.
So why did we call this website mindbodygreen, which wasn't part of the lexicon a couple of years ago? (And why is mindbodygreen one word and not three?)
Well, in honor of Earth Day today, I'd love to explain the two main reasons why we're mindbodygreen.
- To live a complete and fulfilling life, we need a three-prong approach that focuses on mind, body, and green.
- Whether we like it or not, everything is connected: our minds, our bodies, and our environment.
The mind and body are not separate—they're one.
That's why we could read every book in the self-help section, follow someone else's rigid rules to lose weight, but still be unhealthy. If we're out of touch with our body, then we're not truly healthy, because we're disconnected from our self.
So let's say that we've nailed the mindbody part: we have a spiritual practice, we're expressing gratitude on a daily basis, we're meditating, we're doing yoga, we're eating more plants, and we're eating organic ... does this mean we're healthy?
Well, maybe ... or maybe not. There's another piece of the wellness puzzle: the green part. Two questions I encourage us all to ask ourselves:
- What are we putting into our homes and our bodies? Are we using chemicals and toxins, or are our we using natural products? These chemicals and toxins can easily negate all that good work we're doing with our spiritual and physical development.
- Do we have a connection to nature? No matter what your religion (if any at all), you can make the argument that we all come from the same "source" and that we're all connected to each other. Our environment comes from this same place, or creator.
So doesn't that mean we should treat our environment with respect? Ultimately, it's what unifies and supports us all.
So there you have it: mindbodygreen. Not three words, one word. mindbodygreen is all connected.
