I'm a skeptic when it comes to viral beauty products. Is the sold-out liquid blush that's taking over my social feeds all that different from the one currently in my makeup bag? The answer is rarely "yes."

So when Soft Services offered to send over the new fragrances release of its cult-favorite Buffing Bar—created in collaboration with immersive fragrance brand D.S. & Durga—I was dubious. Sure, its predecessor had come highly recommended by my fellow editor, but I couldn't fathom any bar soap would be good enough to earn a 300+ word review.

I'm not too proud to admit I was wrong: The Debaser Buffing Bar is one of my favorite beauty products that I've tried in years. It simultaneously sloughs away dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and restores hydration to give you the softest skin ever (and it smells delicious).

Wait, what is a Buffing Bar?

Your skin naturally sheds between 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute, but this process can slow down with age, certain skin conditions, and even weather. When dead skin cells accumulate, it leads to dull skin, clogged pores, and even acne.

Exfoliation is key to helping slough away these excess cells, which is where the Buffing Bar comes into play. The shea butter bar is infused with exfoliating microcrystals that give it a rough, coarse texture.

Each pass with the bar feels like you're running a pumice stone over your skin (though not quite as aggressive). You can feel the grit stripping away dead skin, and the difference is noticeable right away.

I literally ran out of the shower the first time that I used the scrub to make my sister feel my arm. And while I immediately started raving about my ultra soft skin, I also can't forget the benefits of exfoliation long-term.

As board-certified dermatologist Raechele Cochran Gathers, M.D. previously told mindbodygreen, "Exfoliation can improve skin circulation, encourage skin turnover, and improve the absorption of certain skin care products."

For me, that means fewer ingrown hairs on my upper thighs from shaving, a reduction in the tiny bumps along the back of my arms, and way fewer post-workout breakouts. What's more, my skin absorbs lotion so much faster now.

Why I'm a huge fan of the Debaser Buffing Bar

Of course, it's worth noting I didn't test out just any Buffing Bar. My sample was the new Debaser bar released earlier this week. Developed with the fragrance brand D.S. & Durga, the light purple bar features the brand's best-selling Debaser eau de parfum.

The subtle fragrance combines ripe fig, creamy coconut milk, tonka, and blond woods into a warm, musky scent. When you use the bar, the fragrance overtakes your shower and transforms it into a spa-like experience. The addition of fragrance does make the Debaser bar more expensive than the brand's original unscented option, but I'd argue it's a well worth the extra money.

Plus, the fragrance lingers long after your shower ends. When I climbed into bed after my nightly scrub-down, I was pleasantly surprised that my skin still had the fresh, woodsy scent of fig—and it lasted until morning.

And while the Debaser bar might be a collab with a fragrance house, it still retains all the ethics that I love about the Soft Services brand. The vegan soap is sustainably packaged in paper and shipped in responsibly sourced, FSC-certified paper packaging.

The takeaway

Normally when I get a product sample, I like to pass around extra samples to my friends and family. With the Soft Services Debaser Buffing Bar, I literally hid the extra bar from the 2-pack in my bathroom cabinet to ensure I didn't have to share. I'm that obsessed with this smoothing bar—and the way it fights off ingrown hairs and acne to leave you with soft, glowing skin.
