Run clubs have always been one of my favorite ways to meet new people, and they're finally getting the attention they deserve. Aside from the proven mental and physical benefits of running, the exercise has always appealed to me because it's something you can do alone or with a huge group of people.

The best part? If you're a beginner, you don't need much to get started. For the most part, you can simply step out the door and be on your way to a heart-pumping, mood-boosting (potentially love- or friendship-sparking) workout.

That said, I’ve zeroed in on a few items that make the whole experience way more enjoyable. Through a lot of trial and error, over a dozen half marathons, and four world major marathons—and yes, a few running meet-cutes—I’ve found these five items are essential.

Lululemon Track That Shorts

$68

Not sure what to wear on your first group run? I've suffered through too many wardrobe malfunctions to let you do the same. Trust me when I say you cannot go wrong with these Lululemon shorts.

The high, wide waistband is comfortable and cute, and the brand nailed it with the length. I love that these shorts show off some leg without being revealing—and they're extremely high-quality. I've had mine for years and they've held up so well over time.

They're available in sizes 0 to 20, with four colorways to choose from.

Goodr OG Running Sunglasses

$32

I personally hate squinting through a run with the sun in my eyes, especially if I'm trying to mix and mingle as I go. These trendy glasses were designed specifically for running and they truly look great on everyone.

The polarized lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, while a special grip-coated frame prevents them from slipping even when you sweat. I love that they don’t bounce around on my face as I run!

They're available in 9 colorways, and I suggest grabbing multiples.

MegaBabe Thigh Rescue Anti-Friction Stick

$14

If you've never run on a hot day, allow me to introduce you to chafing: a buzzkill to any runner's high. That's why I'll literally never go on a run without this little anti-chafe stick.

Made with natural ingredients like vitamin E, aloe, pomegranate seed oil, and orange oil, the formula glides on easily and works like a charm. I apply it to my arms and legs before every long run, and I feel so much more comfortable.

Bonus: It's dermatologist and gynecologist-approved and clinically tested for sensitive skin.

SPIbelt Original Running Belt

$27

After years of race training, I had nearly given up on finding a running belt that was actually comfortable. Once I found the SPIbelt, I never looked back. For the first time, I wasn't fidgeting with my belt one bit.

This belt is sleek yet manages to hold everything I need to carry for my training runs and races. It comes in 37 (!!) colors and it's adjustable to fit a variety of body types.

Plus, you'll have easy access to your phone when it's time to exchange numbers with your new run club buddies.

Puma 8-pack Low Cut Socks

$12

In case you're new here: Last year I swapped out my OG favorite running sneakers for the Puma Deviate Nitro and I ran my fasted marathon yet. So it's no surprise the brand's athletic socks also became an essential in my running arsenal.

These durable-yet-breathable socks keep my feet cool and comfortable during even the longest, sweatiest runs—and you can get an 8-pack for less than $13.

With extended cushioning from the heel to the toe, they're designed with arch support and comfort in mind.

The takeaway

Sure, you could head out for a run with nothing but a pair of sneakers—but it’s not going to be very enjoyable. Whether you’re hitting the pavement purely for fun and socialization or you’re training for a personal record, these five items will help you cruise right through.
