It's Time To Start Alkalizing Your Body. Here's Why
When it comes to our health, there are many forces that can work against us including stress, toxins, genetics, pharmaceuticals, and more. These can make the body acidic (more on how below)—but there’s a simple thing many of us can do to help neutralize it, and the team at WelleCo makes it easy to alkalize every day with their popular product, THE SUPER ELIXIR Greens. We can alkalize the body through proper nutrition and supplementation. Making a conscious choice to load your body’s cells up with foods that are alkalizing is a great way to shift into feeding your cells the nutrients and minerals they need to combat all that comes their way.
First, some background on cellular health.
In order to understand what it means to alkalize our bodies, we need a primer on cellular health and, on the flip side, what happens to our cells when they’re not properly fed. We have over a trillion cells1 all constantly working around the clock to perform different yet vital tasks. They make up our tissues and organs (including skin, which is actually a major organ), and they play a huge role in how efficiently we function, affecting our ability to "manufacture" proteins, vitamins, hormones, neurotransmitters, and enzymes and even how we make energy.
If our cells become compromised, they can’t perform their functions correctly and begin a chain reaction that’s the start of a host of health conditions and diseases. It all begins with the cell, and it’s obvious that our focus should be on ensuring our cells are properly fed and well-nourished.
Healthy cells create healthy tissues and organs, and what we feed our cells (via oxygen, environmental contaminants, and diet) is critical to their well-being. When a cell is mutated, it can affect the body’s ability to do its job. In order to support the creation of new, healthy cells, we must do our best to feed them a wide variety of certain nutrients that support their vitality.
What is alkalizing and why is it important?
This is where nutrition comes in. As a dietitian, I question everything I read, especially when buzzwords like "alkalizing" are thrown into the already-confusing mix.
The truth is that the body tightly regulates the pH of our blood2. The body has a pH system—its own acid/base scale—the pH is measured on a scale that tells us how "acidic" or how "basic/alkaline" a substance is. The scale goes from 1 to 14. A substance with a rating below 6 considered to be acidic and above 7 considered to be basic and alkaline. The body does an incredible job of tightly controlling our blood pH between 7.35 to 7.45. Seven is considered neutral, so this leaves us at a slightly alkaline optimal place.
We have three amazing mechanisms within our body that work to control the acid-base balance of our blood. That’s our lungs and kidneys. They keep a really tight hold on this system and ensure we stay within the optimal pH range.
They will also release bicarbonate to regulate3 the acidity of your blood. We must understand that the body does a phenomenal job of this delicate balancing act, but what we choose to feed it can place unnecessary stress on these hardworking organs.
Here's how to eat a more alkalizing diet.
Just because we have these biological systems in place does not mean that we should eat processed food and acidic food and expect to be in fabulous health. The truth is, many of us don’t eat enough fruits and veggies. It’s hard to get them in when we live very busy lives, but our cells thrive on good nourishment. It’s our job to shuttle these nutrients to them by way of a good diet.
Eating fresh whole produce is always a great idea, but actually doing that can be difficult. Supplementing with an alkalizing powder like WelleCo’s SUPER ELIXIR Greens can change the game. This green powder is made up of 45 unique ingredients and is specifically formulated to build strong immunity, brighten skin, fight inflammation, and boost energy.
THE SUPER ELIXIR Greens is not your average single-substance green powder. Instead, it has premium whole food and superfood ingredients that have been formulated to nourish our bodies at that cellular level. Our cells need the healthy fats and a high intake of antioxidants, vitamin C, and phytonutrients to protect against free radical damage4. THE SUPER ELIXIR Greens can easily be added to your routine by simply mixing 2 tablespoons with water (in the handy shaker bottle WelleCo offers) or coconut water or adding it into your smoothie in the morning.
In addition to greens, the Nutritional Science team at WelleCo has included a few hardworking plants in the mix. Psyllium husk and linseed boost gut health with fiber, along with L-glutamine, prebiotics, and probiotics. Dandelion, organic barley grass, wheat grass, and alfalfa naturally support the detox process while providing antioxidants. Maitake and shiitake mushrooms help to protect and build a strong immune system. These are just a few of my favorites.
We should all focus on eating more fruits and vegetables, but getting in those concentrated doses of micronutrients daily is a lot more difficult. We can, however, support our systems with whole food nourishment and concentrated supplements to show our cells the extra support they need to thrive. Cheers to healthy cells!
